Symbolism

You must post 2 times before next Monday, December 5th. Your first post should be submitted by Thursday, December 1st. It is to be in response to one of the prompts below. The second time you post, it must be in response to or in reaction to the post of another student.

1. One Hundred Years of Solitude is seeped in symbolism, allegory, hyperbole and parable. (These literary terms are defined below.) Why do you think Gabriel Garcia Marquez chooses to write his narrative in this way? Choose an aspect of the novel that makes use of one of the aforementioned literary devices then attempt to give meaning to it.

Symbolism: a word or phrase referring to a concrete object, scene, or action which also has some further significance associated with it

Allegory: a story or visual image with a second distinct meaning partially hidden behind its literal or visible meaning. The principal technique of allegory is personification. In written narrative, allegory involves a continuous parallel between two or more levels of meaning in the story. An allegory may be conceived as a metaphor that is extended into a structured system.

Hyperbole: Exaggeration for the sake of emphasis

Parable: A brief tale intended to be understood as an allegory illustrating some moral or lesson.

2. Choose a particular character to evaluate. Determine whether the character traits you have noted are ultimately positive or negative, or both. Explain your reasoning. For example Jose Arcadio Buendia: He is inventive and spends many hours alone on his alchemy experiments trying to discover already known science. This is ultimately negative, because he isolates himself from his family and eventually goes mad.

3.
Identify elements of the story that you find particularly confusing, interesting, or worthy of discussion. Pose your own questions. Include portions of the text that you feel contribute to your questions/your point. Cite page numbers.

  1. I find Arcadio being very suspicious and always up to no good. When Colonel Aureliano Buendia leaves him in charge of the town because of his absence, he then becomes dictator. He is obsessed with giving order and also he tries to sleep with Pilar Ternera who is his mother. She sends him a girl who is a virgin named Santa Sofia de la Piedad who he marries and has three kids. I find this negative because soon after when the liberals lose the war he is executed and now his family is without him.

  2. I would say Ursula is very mother-like; which makes sense since she is the actual mother of Colonel Aureliano Buendia, Jose Arcadio and Amaranta. But I feel she is more of a mother-like figure to everyone younger than she.

  3. I also agree with what Emily said. Arcadio is usually always up to no good and a very suspicious person, and he does love to be in charge and demand orders around.

  4. Although Pilar Ternera is not a major character, references to her throughout the book makes me think of the wife of bath character from Canterburry Tales. It seems like she will sleep with any guy who asks for it and she isn't ashamed for what she is.

  5. I think the relationship between Amaranta and Aureliano Jose is very strange. Amaranta clearly realized that Aureliano Jose was attracted to her early on. Why didn't she try and stop him when it first began? Instead she chose to lead him on some more and then cut him off. And then, after cutting him off and sending him away, when he comes back she allows him in her room once more. She's only confusing him and sending him more mixed signals. Amaranta needs to make up her mind whether or not she wants to be with Aureliano Jose or if she won't allow it.

  6. I think the relationship between Rebeca and Ursula is confusing. I think that Ursula is Rebeca's mother and she should love her regardless of what her choices are. I think that Rebeca marrying Jose Arcadio was not the right choice but it was the one that she made and her mom should honor that and not shun her daughter just because of it. When Ursula says that she won't talk to Rebeca anymore and says that she isn't allowed in the home anymore I thought that wasn't very nice because she should love her daughter unconditionally.

  7. I agree with Ciara. I think that Amaranta was leading Aureliano on, just like she did with Pietro. I agree with her too in the fact that she shouldn't have let her into her room after she sent him away the first time.

  8. One interesting character is Amaranta. In the beginning of the book she is found fighting over Pietro with Rebecca. Then, she has starts an inappropriate relationship with her nephew. It seems that she struggles with finding love, and has given up. I think overall these character traits are negative, because she cant continue to lead on Aureliano Jose if she doesn't love him.

  9. I agree with Emily. I think his desire to sleep with his mother, regardless if he knew she was his mother, is odd because she is so much older. It is sad that his family is now left without a father, and his unborn child will never know him.

  10. Amaranta to me seems like she wants to isolate herself after the death of Peitro Crespi. Although I do think that rejecting Aureliano Jose is a good thing,(after they realize that what they were doing is wrong) but she shouldn't reject others if they come to her. Pietro Crespi is the past now, and she should look for the future even if she is already too old. If Aureliano Jose looked into her why wouldn't someone else? I think it is negative trait of hers, that she keeps isolating herself, even if she felt guilty about Pietro Crespi's suicide. I think that in itself is causing her to grow even older.

  11. I agree with Eleanor about Ursula, she does seem as the mother-like figure in the book. Especially when Colonel Aureliano Buendia goes around leaving a lot of women pregnant and all these women come to Ursula to have the children baptized, and Ursula accepts them.

  12. I still don't understand the time, and how some people like Ursula are alive. Shouldn't she have died from old age by now? Like Visitacion did on page 144. Visitation died because of natural death (old age) and she should have been the around the same age Ursula. But Ursula still dosen't show any signs of ageing. I know this is a book filled with magic reality, but it all seems so real.

  13. Amaranta, at least to me, seems like a complete drama queen. She appears to be a virtuous woman because she has chosen a path of celibacy, but she has a really bad habit of leading people on. First with Pietro, to whom she says yes to the first time he asks to marry him, she says no after he asks numerous additional times. Then there's the whole Aureliano Jose deal which was just plain weird. She knew it was wrong but kept succumbing to the temptation of it. I think she has issues.

  14. I think an interesting character is Pilar Ternera. She has slept with almost all of the males in the Buendia family, and has tons of children. She is also in the red light district-type business, and is in control of many young girls. I thought at first she was a negative character, but then I saw the way she cares about her children and family. She wanted to sleep with Arcadio to make him happy, but she knew it was wrong. So instead, she sent him someone else. I thought this was sort of a strange act of kindness. She has never really done anything bad to anyone else, unlike many of the characters in the book, so I consider her to be a positive character.

  15. In response to Riley's post, and I guess to anyone else who has been confused by some of the magic realism stuff, I actually thought this was supposed to be a fictional story with non-fictional elements. It hit me when the magic carpet actually flew towards the beginning of the book. At first I really struggled with understanding what was going on, then I realized that it isn't even supposed to be real...so from now on just disregard anything that totally makes no sense, which is just about all of it, and accept it anyway.

  16. I agree with ethan i think that Amaranta is a bit of a flirt. She has led on two guys so far in the book. She led on pietro and he killed himself over it. Then she led on Aureliano Jose and shut him down because she was his aunt.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I find that the whole Aureliano Jose loving his aunt, Amaranta, to be a bit strange and confusing. I dont why he feels that way. I dont know if she did something to urge him to fall for her or what.

  18. I don't like the character of Jose Arcadio Buendia. I don't think he necessarily went crazy, but I do think his behavior is strange. I think the whole thing about him getting tied to a tree was odd. Then he began to enjoy being isolated and then when his wife untied him, he ended up back under the tree. Who does that? The thing about him speaking in another language suddenly was only thing that makes me think there is something else controlling him and there could possibly be a worthy point to it. Then he dies. Like what good did that whole thing add to the story as a whole? The government stuff and drama with relatives hooking up and people running away... Then a guy like this? I just don't understand the relevance.

  19. I agree with Ciara. I think Amaranta is being stupid and causing unnecessary drama. She already had issues earlier with pietro and now she is leaning on this guy too. She needs to get over it and realize that he doesn't really deserve what she's doing to him. I don't think she wants to be with him and she needs to make that clear and quit playing with his emotions. Smh.

  20. Amaranta seems like she doesn't believe in love, and she has no hope or motivation to try anymore. I don't she'll ever emotionally get over Pietro's death or stop blaming herself for it. But I also don't think leading on her nephew, and make him fall more in love with her is a good way to fix her problems. She needs to cut off their intimate relationship for her sake and his. Maybe she needs to find someone who doesn't live in that town

  21. I agree with Madison. I think Amaranta has attention issues. She wants attention and will do anything to get it, but once she has it she just pushes the person away. Maybe she is bipolar? I don't understand her motivations of leading on people. I agree that she should find someone new that doesn't live in Macondo.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I also agree with Madison because i think Amaranta doesn't seem to interested in finding love. It would be hard to get over your first loves death when you were the reason why. Like Maya said, I don't understand why she feels the need to lead people on. It messes with her emotions without her realizing it.

  23. I feel like Amaranta is confused on what she wants in her life and I don't really like her character in the book because at first she wanted Pietro and then when he wanted to marry her she didn't want him anymore. Then after Pietro died she went to Aureliano Jose, who she led on because she knew he liked her. She continued on with innapropriate acts and then all of a sudden drops him, they seperate from each other for awhile and then she messes with him again? I feel like she might just like the excitement of the chase or something she knows she shouldn't do and then drops it when she gets bored.

  24. I agree with Angie, Jose Arcadio Buendia is definitely a random character. His role in this book doesn't really go along with anything else that is going on. I don't understand why you would really start to enjoy being tied to a tree to the point where once you are untied you go back to that tree. I also don't understand why after all that he just ends up dying. His part in the book doesn't have a real obvious meaning to it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I also agree with Angie, I don't feel like Jose Arcadio Buendia was really a necessary character. He didn't achieve anything or change much in the story; it kind of seems like everyone else's choices and their stories would still be the same without him. He didn't do much to the story

  26. I think that Amaranta's character is really weird. I don't understand why she wants to have that type of relationship with her nephew and wants to mess with his feelings so much. It's like either she wants to be with him or she does'nt but she should just make up her mind and stop messing with his.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with Maya, Pilar is kind of a weird character. You can't really tell whether she is more of a good person or more bad because she has slept with a lot of different men and had a lot of their children but yet she is a good mother and seems like her heart might be in the right place.

  28. I agree with Ethan, about Amaranta being a drama queen. It is pretty obvious that she has chosen a life of celibacy and doesn't want to get married. But she keeps leading people on, she is huge flirt. I don't understand why she just didn't marry Pietro. At one point she loved him so much that she was prepared to kill her sister. And then when things turned around and Pietro asked her to marry him she ignored him. I don't think she really knows what she wants, and is very high maintenance.

  29. I am confused with the relationship Amaranta and Aureliano Jose have. Amaranta raised Aureliano as her son and he developed feelings for her which is strange. She then realized that it was wrong so she distanced herself but gives off mixed signals.

  31. Character's in this book are weird as hell. They worry about the dumbest things. You have kids that have powers, a town that doesn't sleep, and they tie up and diagnose the wrong person saying he is "Crazy" but they are not the least bit concerned about adult males lusting on young girls and falling madly in love with them. You have people such as Amaranta and she wanted relations with her own son, and then feels ashamed for leading Pietro on, which causes him to kill himself. Which then afterward basically causes her to self mutilate her hand.
This book again has been interesting but at the same time i end up saying WTF dude 0_o

  32. I agree with Madison in the fact that Amaranta doesn't believe in love. I think sometimes when people get hurt by someone they really loved, it can cause them to not believe in love at all or else to think it is stupid. I think Pietro Crespi did that for Amaranta when he chose her second. She felt hurt by his actions and pushed him away, which led to his death. His death also probably brought her much pain, making her believe she will never find love again. Or if she were to find love, she would hurt the other person. She needs to realize her own mistakes and make a change for the better and learn to love again.

  33. also, this is ciara.. for some reason my computer at home wont keep me signed in on my blog account or identify me when i go to comment on these things.. idk its weird.

  34. during when Jose Arcadio was killed, hyperbole was exaggerated to almost the farthest extent it could be with the blood flowing around corners and traveling upwards of three blocks, i think he used this to stretch the minds of people and make it not seem so bad that his blood is spilling out, because without exaggerating it the way he did, would more or less sound weird or eerie

    ReplyDelete
  35. i agree with Paith considering the amount of incest that is going on and the amount of weird turns this book will take

  36. i agree with ciara i dont think that amaranta doesnt believe in love. I also agree she needs to realize her mistakes so she can love again.

  37. I still am confused by all the names and people in the book. I dont understand why the worms make her think that Colonel Aureliano was killed. Amranta is a confusing but interesting person to me.

  38. I agree with Jeremey. I think Amaranta should make up her mind and either chose to be with Aureliano or stop messing with him and leading him on sometimes.

  39. one part in the book that I found a little confusing was in the recent reading when they were talking about Remedios and how beautiful she was but then called her Metally challenged. Usually when you think of beautiful people you dont think they're Metally challenged so that threw me off while I was reading.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with Madison I think Amaranta needs to get away to find true love because she hasnt had the best luck with it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think the book has to many relationships going on and is hard to follow confusing and a bit. To make the matter worse there always getting mad at each other and then finding love.

  42. I agree with Darboham when he says why the most beautiful child is mentally challenged. She must be blonde is my conclusion.
